Did you know that September is National Preparedness Month? We don't always have a warning when a disaster strikes, but there are some ways to take preventative action or to be prepared. Below are some great resources that you may find extremely useful! Check them out!
Insurance Information Institution
The Insurance Information Institute has some free apps that you can download on your mobile devices to help people prepare for disasters. Check them out - here!
Know Your Plan App
Those with Apple products such as an iPhone, iPad, or iTouch can create plans for emergency situations with the Know Your Plan app. This app features Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IIBHS) disaster preparedness guidelines for disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, and severe winter weather.
Family Communication Plan Template
Families can get their disaster preparedness plan together with ready.gov and FEMA's downloadable Family Communication Plan template. They can fill the pages out online and print out their plan. This is a great way to print out multiple copies to have in different accessible locations for family members.
Ready Kids Program
FEMA has a Ready Kids program that uses cartoon characters and kid-friendly content to get them involved in the preparation process.
IBHS ZIP Code Tool
Everyone can use the IBHS ZIP Code tool! It's easy to determine the severe weather risks they face in their community and can get instant access to disaster planning resources.
List of Recommended Supply Kit Items
FEMA has put together a list of recommended supply kit items on their website along with great tips on maintaining the kit, where to store it, and more! This is a great idea when preparing for earthquakes, tornadoes, and more!
Full Inventory of Personal Items
Having a full inventory of your personal belongings will help make the claims process go by so much smoother. Insurance Information Institute has a free home inventory software or even a downloadable pre-written article from the Marketing Solutions Center that has tips for completing and storing your home inventory.
You can never be too prepared! Taking a few minutes to get things in order may save you a bunch of time and not to mention money down the road!
