What kind of condition are the windows in? Do they open/shut easily? Do they lock? Are the screens in good shape?
Is there an easy escapes route in case of a fire? Is there a fire extinguisher?
Where are the smoke detectors and are they working properly?
How old are the appliances? Test them. Is there a fan above the stove?
Do the fridge and freezer work well? Is there frost build up? This is a good thing to avoid because of higher electric bills.
How is the water pressure in the showers and sinks? Does it drain well? Does the toilet flush well?
Do all the lights work properly?
What type of heat does the rental have? Gas or electric?
Is the apartment air-conditioned? How does it work?
Are pets allowed?
Has the apartment cleaned thoroughly before your arrival?
Is exterior lighting sufficient?
Do the washer and dryer work well or is there a facility?
Is there enough closet space?
Who do you call in case of emergency regarding the apartment?
